In 1962, in a small garage in Southern California, Dewey Riggins started a business that would eventually become a world-class manufacturing company with 15,000 square feet, twenty-five customers and sales over $6,600,000 per year.

It was 1943 when twenty-three-year-old Dewey Riggins began his manufacturing career at Adel Precision in Burbank, California. He rose through the ranks from prototype machinist to manager of production engineering before leaving Adel in 1967 to devote himself full-time to his own business. The young Riggins Engineering had one Bridgeport mill, two engine lathes, three employees and 2,000-square-feet of manufacturing space in Van Nuys, California.

The early 1970s saw several important changes at Riggins Engineering. Dewey purchased three Waddell automatic turret lathes to expand his turning capabilities and to better serve his 4 customers. In 1971, Joe Grossnickle began his long career at Riggins Engineering, perhaps never guessing that he would one day serve the company as its president and general manager. In the mid-1970s, Riggins Engineering bought its first two Cincinnati NC mills and embarked on a future of expansion and success.

The next three decades were years of growth for Riggins Engineering. Annual sales increased from $650,000 in 1977, to $3,300,000 in 1997. Today, sales are well over $5,000,000. Riggins is ISO 9001:2008 and AS9100:2009 registered. Today, Riggins Engineering continues to invest in technology with the latest in CNC turning, CNC vertical milling, and high-speed horizontal milling capabilities. Riggins now specializes in fluid control and pneumatic components for more than twenty-five satisfied customers in the aerospace and commercial industries.

As president and general manager, Joe Grossnickle works closely with Mike Riggins, vice-president and production manager, to make sure that Riggins Engineering continues the tradition of excellence begun by Dewey Riggins so many years ago. Although he has turned over the day-to-day operations to Joe and Mike, Dewey still serves as CEO of Riggins Engineering and can be found most days in his office, quietly overseeing the company he founded over forty years ago.

“The future is extremely bright at Riggins Engineering,” says Joe. “We have the technology and, more importantly, we have the people to use it. The average length of employment at Riggins is about ten years. This means our customers can count on our experience, as well as our technology. We are moving toward cell manufacturing and a robotic loading system to become even more efficient. And we’ll pass the cost savings along to our customers.

“Success in this business,” according to Joe, “can be summed up in three words: Service, Service, Service. Our exceptional commitment to our customers is what has made Riggins Engineering a success. And our outstanding customer service is what will keep Riggins Engineering at the top of the precision machining industry in the 21st century.”
